After Balance Patch - Charlotte: The Buffs That Excited Us (But the Data Didn't)
Aria BotAI-powered draft assistant - predict winrates and get pick & ban suggestions in real time.
Open Draft ToolCharlotte's balance adjustment was one of the most exciting changes in the March 2026 patch. Her S1 AoE now triggers on counter attacks, and her S3 fully penetrates the Defense of the tankiest enemy. Counter + Elbris Charlotte was finally supposed to be real.
We tracked her across 3,600+ Champion+ picks post-patch. The data tells a different story.
The Hype Spike
Before the patch, Charlotte was effectively not a hero. Across 301K Champion+ battles, she was picked 75 times - a 0.02% pick rate. The few who tried won 38.7% of the time.
The patch changed that overnight. But the win rate never followed the hype.
| Period | Battles | Picks | Pick Rate | Win Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-patch (season) | 301K | 75 | 0.02% | 38.7% |
| Patch day 1 (Mar 12) | 11.7K | 645 | 5.5% | 45.4% |
| Patch day 2 (Mar 13) | 20.5K | 1,556 | 7.6% | 47.2% |
| Patch day 3 (Mar 14) | 21.5K | 1,231 | 5.7% | 47.6% |
| Settled (Mar 16-17) | 5.8K | 262 | 4.5% | 48.5% |
Charlotte went from nonexistent to genuinely played. But her win rate plateaued around 47%, never crossing 50%.
What Made Counter Charlotte Real
Two changes matter more than the rest.
S1 AoE now triggers on counter attacks. Before, S1 could only become AoE on Charlotte's turn. Counter attacks and Elbris procs were always single-target. Now, as long as Charlotte has a buff and the attack is not a Dual Attack, S1 goes AoE. Every counter proc is a guaranteed-crit AoE hitting the entire enemy team.
S3 now fully penetrates the Defense of the tankiest enemy. Before, tanks barely felt it. Now Charlotte can delete a frontline knight with a single S3.
S2 was reworked into a free barrier every turn plus 50% damage amp and 50% damage reduction while buffed. The barrier is a buff, so Charlotte's S1 AoE condition is always met. S1 also gained 25% CR push on every attack.
Together: enemy attacks -> counter proc -> guaranteed-crit AoE -> 50 Fighting Spirit -> two procs and S3 is ready. The theory is perfect. The meta had other plans.
Why She Struggles
Charlotte's biggest issue is that the heroes she faces most often are the exact heroes that shut her down.
Charlotte's kit revolves around having a buff. Her S2 barrier refreshes every turn, and even if it gets stripped, she can still receive buffs from allies. Buff strippers alone are not enough to shut her down.
Witch of Mere Tenebria is the exception. Her S3 dispels two buffs and applies block - which prevents Charlotte's teammates from buffing or cleansing her. Charlotte can still self-buff with her S2 barrier, but her allies cannot layer additional buffs or cleanse block off her. Once block lands, Charlotte is cut off from her team's support and her kit falls apart.
Witch of Mere Tenebria
CharlotteWhere She Does Win
She punishes aggressive damage strategies where enemies lack buff control.
The Build: Counter + Elbris, Obviously
65% of Charlotte players run Counter + Immunity. 77% use Elbris Ritual Sword. Immunity protects the barrier from being stripped in the opening turns.
Alternative builds exist but are rare:
- Destruction + Torrent (4%) - all-in on S3 burst, gives up the counter-AoE loop
- Counter + Health (5%) - trades Immunity for raw survivability
Best Partners
Lady of the Scales (57.9%, 304 games) is the standout pairing. Her S3 cleanses all debuffs from allies, pushes CR by 25%, and grants abundance - a buff that adds fixed damage per attack. Abundance keeps Charlotte buffed even when her barrier gets stripped, and the extra fixed damage stacks with her AoE counter procs across the entire enemy team.
The Verdict
The balance patch gave Charlotte exactly what she needed on paper. But at 47% win rate, she is still a losing pick on average. The Counter + Elbris gameplan is devastating when it works, but Witch of Mere Tenebria's block cuts Charlotte off from her team's buffs and cleansing - and Tenebria is not a niche pick.
Draft her into comps without buff control. Pair her with speed controllers who buy time for counter procs. Avoid Witch of Mere Tenebria or any comp that applies block.
She is better. She is not good enough.
